Just how much does super middleweight terror David Benavidez want a piece of undisputed divisional champion Canelo Alvarez? So much that he took to Instagram on Friday to address Saudi sports big shot Turki Alalshikh.
“@turkialalshik,” posted 28-0 contender Benavidez, “let’s bring the biggest and most exciting fight to Saudi Arabia. This will be the biggest Mexican vs Mexican American fight in the history of boxing and what better place to do it than The Kingdom, for the entire world to see. This fight is for pride and glory. I fight for greatness not money. Your Excellency if I do not beat Canelo, I will donate my entire purse to any kids charity of your liking. When I do beat Canelo, I will be donating a huge amount of that purse to benefit children hunger across the world. I’m a champion of the people and will continue to fight the best! I stand by my words! @premierboxing @wbcboxing @wbcmoro“
It’s important to mention that Canelo has not displayed much interest in taking on Benavidez, at least not immediately. However, it's worth noting that Canelo faced criticism for supposedly "avoiding" Gennady Golovkin in the past. Eventually, he ended up having three bouts with Golovkin, winning two out of three (although many believed Golovkin won the first fight). So, even though he is not currently set to fight Benavidez (Canelo will be up against Jaime Munguia in May), there is a possibility that he might face the formidable contender in the future.
Benavidez and his fans are not pleased about this situation. The matchup between Canelo and Benavidez is considered one of the biggest fights in the sport. Moreover, it is evident that Benavidez should be next in line to challenge the legendary Canelo. If Canelo were not holding onto the divisional title, the scenario might be different. However, the red-headed star is determined to keep his belts.
Saudi Arabia has emerged as a hub for top-tier boxing due to the significant financial investments it makes in the sport, making it a logical destination. Nevertheless, Canelo still prefers to fight in the United States and Mexico. It is clear that Canelo has recently mentioned that he would require a substantial payout if he were to face Benavidez in the ring. In an interview with Fight Hub, he stated, "If some promoter I work with comes to me and says, ‘I’m offering you 150 or 200 million dollars,’ that would be the only reason I would fight him."
