Amid the secretive soundstage outside of London and the chilly December air, the crew and cast of the series "Bridgerton" were hard at work. Among them was Nicola Coughlan, known for her role as Penelope Featherington.

With the upcoming season of the Netflix series set to premiere on May 16, fans can anticipate a new side of Coughlan's character. This season, her character undergoes a significant journey that not only transforms on screen but also mirrors Coughlan's personal growth as an actress.

"She really becomes herself," shared Coughlan.

Coughlan's road to stardom was not without its challenges; she balanced part-time work at an optician's office in Galway with auditions in London. Despite the obstacles, she remained steadfast in her pursuit.

"I think I felt foolish. It's like winning the lottery. It just really doesn't happen for most people. And it's terribly unfair because it often has very little to do with talent. I knew incredible people at drama school who never worked," reflected Coughlan.

Penelope's journey began with the hit comedy series "Derry Girls," where she portrayed a Catholic schoolgirl navigating the challenges of teenage life during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. This role served as a stepping stone that eventually led her to "Bridgerton."

In the upcoming season, Penelope will face new obstacles as she takes on her first romantic lead role, a departure from her usual comedic characters. The actress admitted to feeling terrified and intimidated by the change, as she is accustomed to portraying funny and awkward roles.

However, starring alongside Luke Newton, who plays her romantic interest Colin Bridgerton, helped alleviate her fears.

"I always remind myself that every character I portray as an actor contains a part of me," she shared. "Initially, I was frustrated with myself for feeling this way, but then I realized that Penelope would likely feel the same."

The upcoming season of the show will showcase approximately 40 unique hairstyles for Penelope, crafted by Emmy-winning hair and make-up designer Erika Ökvist. Additionally, viewers can expect to see a plethora of vibrant gowns, a signature element of the series, as Penelope undergoes a transformative makeover in her quest to secure a husband.

"Throughout the season, Penelope truly matures and evolves into a woman. The designs of the dresses and corsets mirror this growth," Coughlan revealed.
