Katie Taylor Becomes Undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Katie Taylor claimed the title of undisputed junior welterweight champion of the world in her home country of Ireland. Facing off against reigning champion Chantelle Cameron, Taylor sought to avenge her previous loss to Cameron, who had defeated her in a majority decision back in May.
The highly anticipated fight, scheduled for ten two-minute rounds, showcased Taylor's solid footwork and effective jabs. Although Taylor briefly went down in the first round, it was ruled a slip. Both fighters exchanged blows in the second round, but Taylor's sharper punching gave her the edge. In the third round, Taylor focused on maintaining distance and countering Cameron's attacks, unleashing impressive combinations.
A cut on the right hand side of the forehead led to the ring doctor giving it a look and giving it an okay before the action resumed at the start of the fourth. Some of the flurries didn’t always land cleanly, but the clean shots – which caused the fans to explode into cheers – were telling. With that being said, the jabs were well delivered in the fifth. Also, good work cutting off the ring from the opponent in the round.
The opponent looked like she might be getting a bit tired in the sixth. Suffice to say, a strong round was delivered. There was a lot of holding in the high octane seventh. The round, however, ended with the fists of both combatants flying. The eighth was enough for fans to ask exactly how much energy these fighters had in them. The pace was blistering, the heart of each woman extremely impressive. The opponent proved she was still able to engage in high energy bursts in the ninth. Yet, her face a mask of blood, fought furiously herself.
The tenth and final round saw the opponent maintain range and hold – at least at first. The end of the bout however, transformed in large part into an explosive firefight. Ultimately it was the opponent who got the judge’s nod after the fight had ended. She is now the undisputed champion of the both the lightweight and the junior welterweight divisions, an extraordinary achievement. With that being said, a third fight with the opponent may well be in order.
