Lobsterman Rescues Occupant of Stolen Vehicle in Maine
A lobsterman in Maine bravely jumped from his boat to rescue the occupant of a stolen vehicle that had driven into a bay. The incident occurred at the Cutter Street Boat Launch in Portland, Maine, near East End Beach.
According to reports, the vehicle had entered the water and started floating away before eventually sinking with a person still inside. Fortunately, the lobsterman, referred to as a "Good Samaritan" by the police, was nearby and equipped with dive gear.
While members of the local police and fire departments forced entry into the submerged vehicle, the lobsterman entered the water to assist in rescuing the occupant. With his help, the person was successfully pulled out of the vehicle and brought to the boat launch.
This courageous act of heroism highlights the bravery and selflessness of individuals in the community. The lobsterman's quick thinking and willingness to risk his own safety undoubtedly saved a life.
According to the Portland Police Lieutenant Robert Doherty, the brave citizen who assisted in the rescue put their own life at risk to save this individual, giving them a real chance at survival.
News Center Maine, an NBC News affiliate, has identified the lobsterman as Manny Kourinos. Kourinos told News Center Maine that he was simply acting on instinct.
"It was second nature," he said. "I've been diving for over 20 years, and I've never been in a situation where I had to rescue someone from underwater."
The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact them.
