MINNEAPOLIS — Authorities have made an arrest in connection with the tragic death of a Minnesota hockey player who suffered a grave injury during a game in the U.K. last month.
South Yorkshire Police announced on Tuesday that a man has been taken into custody on suspicion of manslaughter in relation to the death of Adam Johnson. Johnson, who was playing for the Nottingham Panthers on October 28, sustained a severe neck injury when another player's skate accidentally cut him. Despite receiving medical attention, Johnson tragically passed away at a hospital.
"Immediately following this tragedy, our investigation was launched, and we have since been conducting thorough inquiries to piece together the events that led to Adam's untimely demise in these unprecedented circumstances," stated South Yorkshire Police Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall. "We have sought the expertise of highly specialized professionals to assist us in our inquiries and have maintained close collaboration with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which has provided invaluable support throughout our ongoing investigation."
Police have been providing support to Johnson's family throughout the investigation, offering them comfort during this difficult time.
"The untimely passing of Adam Johnson has sent shockwaves through various communities, both locally in Sheffield and among ice hockey enthusiasts worldwide," stated Horsfall. "We understand that these communities expect us to conduct this investigation with utmost professionalism, fairness, and sensitivity. We kindly request that the public refrains from making any comments or engaging in speculation that could impede this process. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident as we continue our inquiries."
When the injury occurred, the Panthers referred to it as a "freak accident."
Adam Johnson, a 29-year-old native of Hibbing, Minnesota, had played college hockey for the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. He briefly played in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Earlier this month, thousands gathered at the Hibbing Memorial Arena to pay tribute to Johnson. Hockey teams worldwide, including the Minnesota Wild, have also honored his memory.
The Panthers have scheduled a memorial game for Johnson on Saturday. The team will wear special jerseys and raise funds for the Love for Hibbing and Hockey Memorial Fund, which was established in Johnson's name after his passing.
