Republican Congressman Faces Expulsion from Congress Following Ethics Committee Report

The Republican chairman of the House Ethics Committee has introduced a resolution to expel GOP Representative George Santos from Congress. This comes after the committee released a scathing report detailing extensive wrongdoing by Santos.

Although the House Ethics Committee left the decision on Santos' future in Congress to lawmakers, the committee's chairman, Representative Michael Guest of Mississippi, believes that the evidence presented is more than enough to justify expulsion. He filed the resolution in his capacity as a member of the House.

The resolution states, "Given his egregious violations, Representative George Santos is not fit to serve as a member of the United States House of Representatives. Therefore, be it resolved that pursuant to article I, section 5, clause 2 of the Constitution of the United States, Representative George Santos be, and he hereby is, expelled from the United States House of Representatives."

In a statement, Representative Guest explained that the Ethics Committee decided to conclude its work without going through a lengthier process that would involve making a recommendation of punishment to the House. This decision was influenced by the intense public scrutiny surrounding Santos and the ongoing activity at the Department of Justice, including indictments.

The House Fails to Expel Santos

The House of Representatives has attempted to expel Representative George Santos on two separate occasions, but both attempts have been unsuccessful.

Shortly after the House Ethics Committee released its report on Thursday, Santos made the surprising announcement that he will not seek reelection. This decision contradicts his previous statements in which he expressed his intention to run for office even if expelled.
