Walnut Recall Due to E. Coli Outbreak

A recent E. coli outbreak has led to a recall of walnuts sold at various natural food stores, including Whole Foods, across 19 states.

Gibson Farms, a company based in Hollister, California, is voluntarily recalling their Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts after discovering potential contamination with an E. coli strain. This particular strain can cause a diarrheal illness, sometimes accompanied by bloody stools.

While most healthy adults can recover from E. coli within a week, there is a risk of developing severe complications such as kidney failure, especially among the young and elderly.

The FDA suspects that over 300 retail locations in states like Alaska, California, Texas, and more may have received the affected walnuts. The outbreak has so far affected individuals in California and Washington.

For more information, you can refer to the official notice from the Food and Drug Administration.
