Pop music sensation Britney Spears finalized a settlement this week regarding legal fees requested by her father and former conservator, Jamie Spears.
Addressing the matter on Friday, the singer's attorney, Matthew Rosengart, stated, "Her newfound freedom now extends to no longer having to participate in court proceedings or be caught up in legal matters related to this issue."
After almost 14 years under a conservatorship, Spears saw it come to an end in November 2021.
Detailing her experience in her memoir, she revealed how the conservatorship controlled every aspect of her life — from her food intake and career to decisions regarding birth control. She expressed that she wasn't even allowed to have a cup of coffee.
"Despite my pleas for the court to appoint literally anyone else — I mean, even a stranger off the street would have been a better choice — my father was granted the position," she writes, referring to the conservator role.
Britney Spears and Father Reach Settlement in Conservatorship Battle
After months of legal battles and public scrutiny, Britney Spears and her father, Jamie Spears, have reached a settlement in their conservatorship dispute. The pop star had been fighting to remove her father as the conservator of her estate, alleging financial misconduct and abuse of power.
If a settlement was not reached, the singer and her father could have been forced into a trial, rehashing the bitter conservatorship. Britney Spears asserted allegations that her father was wrongfully enriching himself in his role as conservator. Jamie Spears has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, insisting all of his decisions in the role were made in his daughter's best interests.
No terms of the settlement were released publicly.
