An inmate who escaped from a Georgia jail last month and the woman who allegedly helped him face federal charges, according to a news release by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Georgia.

Johnifer Dernard Barnwell, 37, has been charged with escape from custody, while Janecia Green, 30, has been charged with assisting the escape of a person committed to custody. Both individuals are from Macon, Georgia. If convicted, they could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

No specific information about how Green assisted in the escape has been provided by authorities.

Barnwell was apprehended on Sunday morning after being on the run for nearly a month, as stated in a news release by the Bibb County Sheriff. The arrest was made by the sheriff's office's gang unit, the FBI, and their SWAT team at a residence in Augusta, Georgia, where Barnwell was found in possession of "large amounts of drugs of trafficking quantity."

Barnwell had been held at Bibbs County Jail while awaiting sentencing for a federal narcotics conviction, for which he was expected to receive a significant prison term, according to the sheriff's office.

On Oct. 16, four male inmates managed to escape from a jail in an unconventional manner. They climbed out of a damaged window in a day room and made their way through a cut fence.

Surveillance footage captured the escape, revealing a blue Dodge Challenger parked just outside the jail at 3 a.m. local time. The video also showed an individual tampering with the fence and bringing items into the area.

The following day, the blue Dodge Challenger was discovered in Macon, a city approximately 80 miles southeast of Atlanta. It was found parked in the lot of Biotmat USA, a blood and plasma donation center.

Bibb County Sheriff confirmed that three out of the four escapees have been apprehended. Along with Barnwell, Chavis Demaryo Stokes, 29, who was detained for possession of a firearm and drug trafficking, was captured on Oct. 26. Marc Kerry Anderson, 25, who was in jail for aggravated assault, was apprehended on Nov. 3.

The authorities are still actively searching for Joey Fournier, who was being held on a murder charge related to the 2022 death of his ex-girlfriend.

Barnwell had his initial appearance in Augusta, Georgia, on Nov. 13 and has since been remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the news release. The U.S. Marshals Service will transport Barnwell back to the Middle District of Georgia for further court proceedings.

Green's Court Appearance

Green appeared in court in Macon on November 15th and was held without bond. A detention hearing is scheduled for November 21st to determine her future bond status.
