David DePape Found Guilty of Assaulting Paul Pelosi
David DePape was found guilty in a federal court on Thursday for bludgeoning Paul Pelosi, the husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with a hammer at their San Francisco mansion last year.
The jury deliberations resumed on Thursday morning after failing to reach a verdict by 5 p.m. on Wednesday. DePape was charged with attempting to kidnap a federal official and assaulting an immediate family member of a federal official with intent to retaliate against the official for the performance of their duties. His defense argued that the charges did not fit as he was not targeting Nancy Pelosi due to her official duties as a member of Congress.
DePape now faces life in prison as a result of the conviction.
During the trial, DePape's defense did not dispute that he had struck Paul Pelosi multiple times with a hammer, causing fractures to his skull and injuries to his hands and arms. DePape claimed that he had gone to the Pelosis' home on October 28, 2022, with the intention of seeking out Nancy Pelosi as part of a larger plan to end what he perceived as government corruption, a view that had been reinforced by his constant consumption of right-wing media.
