Tiny Terrier Survives in Colorado Mountains

A courageous Jack Russell terrier managed to survive in the Colorado mountains for over 10 weeks after her owner tragically died of hypothermia. Despite the harsh conditions, the resilient dog named Finney lost half her body weight during this ordeal, according to a rescuer.

The incident occurred when Richard Moore and his 12-pound companion set out to climb Blackhead Peak in Pagosa Springs, Colorado on August 19. However, they never returned home, leading to concerns for their safety. The Archuleta County Sheriff's Office launched a search operation, but their efforts to locate Moore and Finney on the treacherous and steep western side of the mountain were unsuccessful.

Delinda VanneBrightyn, a member of Taos Search and Rescue, revealed that their search dog was also involved in the mission. The hike to Blackhead Peak involves a significant elevation gain of 2,150 feet from the starting point.

It was not until October 30 that a hunter discovered Moore's lifeless body in the San Juan Mountains. Remarkably, Finney was still by his side, although her weight had dropped to a mere 6 pounds, VanneBrightyn reported on Tuesday.

The following day, a recovery crew was dispatched to the area. Finney was promptly taken to a veterinarian for a thorough examination and necessary treatment. She has since been reunited with Moore's family, as confirmed by the sheriff's office.

Finney's incredible tale of survival is a testament to her unwavering dedication and loyalty to Moore, according to VanneBrightyn, a seasoned dog trainer. "Jack Russells are known for their feistiness and toughness," she remarked.

The hunter discovered Moore's body approximately 1.5 miles east of the summit, farther away from his car, VanneBrightyn revealed.

Despite being an experienced hiker, Moore succumbed to hypothermia, as confirmed by Archuleta County Coroner Brad Hunt. Hypothermia can cause disorientation and confusion.

Remarkably, tiny Finney managed to survive by hunting small animals like mice while also evading predators such as mountain lions, coyotes, and bears, VanneBrightyn explained.

"If that dog could speak, it would be an incredible story," she stated. "We probably wouldn't even believe the story the dog would tell."

"We are extremely grateful...that Finney has been reunited with the family, as they have lost a loved one but still have this amazing, loyal dog," VanneBrightyn expressed.

Blackhead Peak, which stands at an elevation of 12,500 feet, is situated in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado.

Finney's story of survival marks at least the third instance where a dog has been found alive alongside a deceased hiker since last year. In May 2022, a Labrador was discovered lying next to the body of a 74-year-old Arizona man who had passed away during a hike.

Tragic Discovery in Griffith Park

In a heartbreaking incident, the lifeless body of a 29-year-old hiker was discovered in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. The hiker had gone missing for several weeks before this tragic discovery.

What made this discovery even more heart-wrenching was the presence of the hiker's loyal dog, who had remained by his side throughout the entire ordeal. Family members revealed that the dog had not left the hiker's side for a staggering two weeks.
