Upgrade Your Storage with This Clever Entryway Solution

Sideboard turned into entryway storage

If you are constantly tripping on shoes and bags every time you walk into your house, it's time to upgrade your storage situation. Whether you are lacking storage due to a smaller space or simply do not know the best way to create storage, Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson, the hosts of HGTV's "Married to Real Estate," have the answers you are looking for. When renovating your home, Sherrod and Jackson recommend keeping storage space in mind by adding a repurposed sideboard to your entryway.

If you are unsure about what a sideboard actually is, you'll be surprised to learn that you may already have one in your home. Sideboards are often used in a dining room to display and store cutlery and dishes, and can come in the form of a credenza, buffet table, or server. However, Sherrod and Jackson recommend moving it out of your dining space and into your entryway, and here's why.

The biggest characteristic of a sideboard is the fact that while they provide ample storage, they don't take up too much space. Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson of HGTV 's "Married to Real Estate" recommend changing the way you use your sideboard. Instead of placing your china or unused dishes, use it in your entryway to hold items like shoes and hats. During Season 2, Episode 1, Sherrod and Jackson repurposed a sideboard in the home and moved it to the homeowners entryway, creating a storage solution without spending any money.

Using this idea is quite easy. If you already own some sort of sideboard, simply pick it up and move it to an empty wall near your front door (or wherever your family enters the house). Use the smaller, upper drawers for things like keys or sunglasses, and optimize the lower cabinets by adding shoe racks and bins for loose items like scarves and hats. If you don't currently have a sideboard in your home, consider purchasing one to create aesthetically-pleasing storage in your entryway.

Sideboards to consider for your entryway

If you are in the market for entryway storage and want to latch onto the idea of using a sideboard, your options are seemingly endless. Before you start shopping, you first need to consider the size of your wall space. Determine where you want to place your sideboard and measure that wall to ensure your new piece will fit seamlessly. You also want to pay attention to the storage it provides. Some sideboards feature drawers and cabinets, while others may just have cabinets. Consider what you plan to put in your sideboard and how to best optimize your storage.

In their latest home improvement show "Married to Real Estate," Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson showcased a smaller sideboard, also known as a server, as a key piece of furniture. To achieve a similar look, you can opt for the Bay Isle Home 30” Sideboard available at Wayfair for $159.99 or the Cloquet 31.5” Sideboard from Wayfair priced at $121.99, perfect for creating a farmhouse aesthetic. For larger spaces, consider a credenza such as the Walker Edison Liss Contemporary 4-Door Minimalist Sideboard available on Amazon for $287.40 or the Stockholm sideboard from IKEA priced at $599.
