Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was reportedly involved in a scandal where she took multiple round trip flights paid for by a special prosecutor, who she is accused of having a romantic relationship with.
In the midst of the divorce proceedings between special prosecutor Nathan Wade and his estranged wife Jocelyn Wade, Jocelyn filed a document on Friday as part of the proceedings. The document showed the credit card history of Nathan Wade, revealing that he had booked flights for both himself and Willis to travel between San Francisco and Miami.
The filing by Jocelyn Wade came after Willis' attorney accused Jocelyn of attempting to interfere with the district attorney's case against former President Donald Trump and other defendants. Jocelyn is seeking to question Willis as part of their ongoing divorce case and submitted the document as a response to Willis' claim.
Prior to this filing, there had been no public evidence of the alleged relationship between Willis and the special prosecutor.
Last week, allegations were made against Willis regarding her alleged romantic involvement with Nathan Wade. These accusations were publicly made by Michael Roman, one of Trump's co-defendants, in a court filing. Roman claimed that Willis had an improper personal relationship with Wade while paying him over $650,000 for his work on the case. He also alleged that they used some of that money for vacations together, including Caribbean cruises and trips to Florida and California's Napa Valley.
On the same day, Willis was served a subpoena in the divorce case of Jocelyn Wade. Her attorney described the subpoena as an attempt to harass and damage Willis' reputation.
Willis' office has announced that they will respond to the accusations made by Jocelyn Wade in a filing due on February 2nd. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for February 15th.
As of now, there has been no comment from Willis' spokesperson.
Several filings related to the Wades' divorce proceedings have been sealed. However, news organizations, including CBS News, have requested to unseal these documents.
In a speech at an Atlanta church, Willis defended her decision to hire Wade, despite his lack of experience in prosecuting complex racketeering cases. She praised him as a "superstar" with impeccable credentials, highlighting his two decades of experience as a lawyer and ten years as a municipal judge.
Both Trump and Roman have pleaded not guilty to racketeering charges in the case, which accuses them and others of attempting to illegally overturn Georgia's 2020 presidential election results.
It remains uncertain what impact the allegations against Willis and Nathan Wade will have on the case. Legal analyst Rikki Kleiman from CBS News suggests that the accusations could have consequences, regardless of whether they are proven true or not.
"I don't anticipate this case being dismissed and forgotten, but it is possible for a different prosecutor and prosecutor's office to take over the case, in order to eliminate any suspicion of misconduct," she stated.
The controversy has attracted the attention of Steven Sadow, Trump's attorney in the case, who addressed it on LinkedIn on Friday.
"PROOF - take a look at pages 12-15: Travel and hotel records of Special Prosecutor Wade and DA Willis," Sadow posted, sharing a copy of Jocelyn Wade's filing.
