Minneapolis Grocery Store Employee Fatally Stabbed
MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police are investigating a stabbing that left a grocery store employee dead.
Police arrived at a grocery store in Loring Park around 1 p.m. on Friday, according to a news release from the Minneapolis Police Department. The victim was identified as a 66-year-old man who worked at Oak Street Grocery, a local business.
The department stated that the man was found behind the counter "with a golf club impaled through his torso."
First responders provided immediate medical aid to the victim and he was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center. Despite efforts to save his life, the man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
In a news conference held late Friday, Police Chief Brian O'Hara revealed that the suspect had collected items from the store and taken them to the counter. O'Hara described the attack as "very grotesque" and stated that the suspect assaulted and bludgeoned the victim behind the counter.
According to police, a witness provided officers with information that led them to an apartment unit nearby, where the suspect had barricaded himself. A standoff occurred and emergency responders, including negotiators and the bomb squad from the Minneapolis Police Department, were called to the scene. After nearly six hours, the man was arrested without any issues, as stated in a news release.
The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed, but police have confirmed that he is 44 years old.
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
