Man Arrested for Killing Homeless Men in Los Angeles

A man has been arrested in connection with the murders of three homeless men in Los Angeles. The suspect, who is already in custody for another crime, has been identified as 33-year-old Jarred Joseph Powell, according to LAPD Chief Michel Moore.

The three murders took place in different parts of the city and were carried out this week. All of the victims were shot and killed while they were sleeping during the early morning hours.

The first murder occurred on Sunday, Nov. 26, at around 3 a.m. in an alley behind 836 West 110th Street. The victim has been identified as 37-year-old Jose Vamos.

The second murder took place on Monday, Nov. 27, at approximately 4:55 a.m. on the 800 block of East Seventh Street. The victim, identified as 62-year-old Mark Digs, was found along a rear wall.

The third incident took place at Hollenbeck division on Wednesday, Nov. 29, around 2:30 a.m., near the intersection of South Avenue 18 and Pasadena Avenue. The victim was a 52-year-old male.

The robbery and alleged murder of Nicholas Simbolon occurred on Tuesday, Nov. 28, and the suspect, Powell, was arrested for that incident a day later.

Nicholas Simbolon, 42, was fatally shot as he parked his Tesla in his garage on Hawkbrook Drive on Tuesday. Detectives believe that Powell followed his victim home from a vehicle charging station on the 200 block of South Citrus Street in West Covina.

During the manhunt for the homeless murder suspect, Mayor Karen Bass urged individuals living on the streets to immediately seek shelter.

"Our message to the unhoused community is clear — do not sleep alone tonight. Seek shelter, seek services, stay together, seek support, and we need your help to spread the word," Bass said.

Two photos of the suspect, as well as a car believed to be involved, were released.
