Washington — House lawmakers voted to remove GOP Rep. George Santos from Congress on Friday, marking him as only the sixth member in U.S. history to be expelled by a vote of his colleagues.
The final tally on the resolution to expel Santos was 311 to 114, surpassing the two-thirds majority required under the Constitution to succeed.
Among Republicans, 105 members voted in favor of expulsion, while 112 voted against it. On the other hand, Democrats were more united with 206 supporting expulsion and only two voting against it. (Eight members — three Democrats and five Republicans — did not cast a vote, and two Democrats voted "present.")
Santos' tenure on Capitol Hill lasted less than a year and was marred by scandals.
How many votes are needed to expel a member of Congress?
Article I, section 5 of the Constitution stipulates that the House and the Senate can expel members if two-thirds of the chamber support doing so.
On Friday, the House of Representatives voted on the expulsion of Representative Santos. The resolution, officially known as House Resolution 878, required a two-thirds majority to pass. The threshold for expulsion was set at 285 votes, taking into account the eight members who were absent.
