Aliquippa Water Authority Hacked by Iranian-Backed Cyber Group
ALIQUIPPA, Pa. - The Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa announced on Saturday that one of their booster stations had fallen victim to a cyber attack by an Iranian-backed cyber group.
Matthew Mottes, the chairman of the board of directors for the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa, confirmed the incident and identified the cyber group as Cyber Av3ngers. The attack triggered an alarm as soon as it occurred.
Mottes emphasized that the affected station, situated on the outskirts of town, is responsible for monitoring and regulating pressure for Raccoon and Potter Townships. He reassured the public that there is currently no known risk to the drinking water or water supply.
The targeted machine operates on a system called Unitronics, which Mottes revealed has software or components that are Israeli-owned.
Following the attack, the system has been disabled, and the Pennsylvania State Police have been called in to conduct a criminal investigation at the booster station.
CyberAv3ngers has claimed responsibility for various attacks worldwide, including 10 water treatment stations in Israel as of October 30, 2023, according to their X page.
