Daryl Hall Files Restraining Order Against John Oates

Daryl Hall, one half of the pop rock duo Hall & Oates, has filed a restraining order against his former musical collaborator, John Oates. The duo, known for their numerous hits and 18 studio albums released together, have apparently grown apart over the years.

The temporary restraining order request was filed by Hall in a Nashville Chancery Court on November 16. It was served to Oates, as well as his wife Aimee J. Oates and business manager Richard Flynn, who are both co-trustees of his trust, on November 20.

The reason behind the restraining order is currently unknown, but it has been labeled as a Contract/Debt case on the Nashville Chancery Court website. CBS News has reached out to Hall's attorney and Flynn for more information, but there has been no response yet.

Despite their successful music career together, including hits like "Rich Girl" and "You Make My Dreams Come True," Hall revealed during an interview on "Club Random with Bill Maher" last year that they have always had a separate dynamic.

"John and I are not just brothers, we are also partners in business," Hall revealed. "Although we collaborated on records under the name Hall & Oates, we have always maintained our separate identities, and that is something I value greatly." Hall went on to mention that he was the primary contributor to the duo's work, pointing out that Oates was not credited as a songwriter for their 1980 hit song "Kiss on My List," while Hall was.

Hall, who is now 77 years old, and Oates, who is 75, first met when they were both freshmen at Temple University. In a 2013 interview with Dan Rather, Hall shared that they crossed paths at a gig. After a fight broke out, they coincidentally ended up in the same elevator and struck up a conversation that eventually led to a friendship and musical partnership.

In 2017, prior to embarking on a tour together, the duo sat down for an interview with "CBS Sunday Morning."

"Did I ever imagine that I would be working with John and sitting side-by-side all these years later?" Hall pondered. "No, it never even crossed my mind."

Oates added, "Our profession is what everyone dreams of. We get to play instruments, sing, write music, and make records. Why would anyone want to quit?"

"If you look at every album we have ever released, it always says, 'Daryl Hall and John Oates,'" Oates pointed out. "Now, it may seem like a small distinction. But we have always seen ourselves as two distinct individuals who come together to work. And to this day, that is how we see ourselves."
