Brazil Records Hottest-Ever Temperature
Brazil experienced its highest temperature ever on Sunday, as thermometers in the small city of Araçuaí reached 44.8 Celsius (112.6 Fahrenheit), according to the National Institute of Meteorology.
The previous record was set in November 2005 in the city of Bom Jesus, with a temperature of 112.4 Fahrenheit.
The National Institute of Meteorology reported that Sunday marked the end of a major heat wave, which was the eighth one to hit Brazil this year.
Prior to the record-breaking temperatures, Taylor Swift postponed an Eras Tour concert in Rio de Janeiro due to the unfortunate death of a 23-year-old fan during her Friday night show.
The high temperatures and humidity in Brazil led to an apparent temperature of 59°C (138°F) inside the stadium where Swift performed, resulting in what one fan described as "sauna-like" conditions.
Although temperatures in Brazil have since dropped, the country is currently experiencing a series of storms that will continue throughout the week, bringing up to three inches of rainfall to certain areas. The National Institute of Meteorology has issued warnings for lightning, severe wind, and hail.
