The tragic incident involving professional cyclist Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson has led to a lawsuit filed by her family against convicted killer Kaitlin Armstrong, seeking over $1 million in damages in a wrongful death lawsuit.
In the lawsuit, Wilson's parents Karen and Eric Wilson are pursuing "monetary relief exceeding $1,000,000.00, inclusive of damages, penalties, costs, expenses, and interest, with the final determination to be made by a jury.
Describing May 12, 2022, as the most devastating day in their lives, the Wilsons stated in the lawsuit obtained by CBS News that "Defendant Kaitlin Marie Armstrong fatally shot their beloved daughter, Anna Moriah Wilson, known fondly as 'Mo'."
The lawsuit claims that Armstrong acted negligently, unlawfully, wantonly, and recklessly with her firearm, violating safety laws and ultimately causing Wilson's death through the shooting. It also accuses Armstrong of assaulting Wilson.
Among the expenses sought in the damages are funeral costs and compensation for emotional distress, as outlined in the lawsuit.
"The lawsuit stated that the immeasurable elements of loss, such as the impact on society and companionship derived from love, comfort, and companionship, cannot be quantified with exactitude," according to the legal documents.
A tragic incident unfolded as Wilson was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound.
Law enforcement revealed that Wilson had a previous relationship with Armstrong's partner, and the two maintained a close bond, spending time together on the day of the fatal event. Armstrong allegedly used a fitness app to track Wilson's location, entering the residence shortly after Wilson was dropped off by her boyfriend.
Following the crime, Armstrong fled to Costa Rica, where she assumed a new identity through plastic surgery and changed her appearance to evade capture. After nearly six weeks in the Central American nation, U.S. Marshals apprehended Armstrong.
Armstrong, found guilty of murder in January 2024, has been given a sentence of 90 years behind bars. Currently, she is serving her time at the Gatesville Corrections Center in Texas.
