Golden Globes to Air Live on CBS in 2024

CBS is set to host the Golden Globes live for the first time in 2024, according to a statement released by CBS Entertainment on Friday.

The three-hour award show extravaganza, known for its boozy dinner-party atmosphere, will be broadcast live on CBS on Sunday, January 7. The broadcast will begin at 5:00 p.m. Pacific time, following an NFL football doubleheader. In addition to airing on CBS, the show will also be available for streaming on Paramount+ and the app as part of a new deal between the network and the Golden Globes.

George Cheeks, the president and chief executive officer of CBS, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that "the Globes adds an exciting new dimension" to the network.

This marks the first time that the Golden Globes will be aired on CBS, as the long-time partnership with NBC comes to an end. The decision to switch networks comes after a series of scandals and boycotts that rocked the award show. In 2022, a Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which previously organized the awards, had no Black members. This led to widespread criticism and many stars and studios boycotting the show.

With the new partnership with CBS, the Golden Globes aims to rebuild its reputation and address the ethical improprieties that have plagued the award ceremony in the past.

The 2023 Golden Globes made their return to NBC this year, marking a significant moment for the award show. This came after the sale of the show by the HFPA to Todd Boehly's Eldridge Industries, which led to the dissolution of the nonprofit organization and its membership. The firm, which also owns Dick Clark Productions and the Beverly Hilton, transformed the Golden Globes into a for-profit venture. What began in 1944 as an informal ceremony to honor actors has now become an internationally recognized event, broadcasted in 185 countries worldwide.

CBS is part of Paramount Global, which also owns CBS News.
