The U.S. Air Force reported a heartbreaking incident at the Special Operations Wing located at Hurlburt Field, Florida, where an airman lost his life in a confrontation with a sheriff's deputy.
The airman, Senior Airman Roger Fortson, aged 23, tragically passed away at his off-base residence, as confirmed by the U.S. Air Force in a statement released on Monday. The incident took place at his home in Chez Elan Apartments, approximately five miles away from the air base, as WKRG reported.
According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, a deputy responded to a call regarding a disturbance in progress and was forced to act in self-defense when faced with a 23-year-old armed man, as stated in a news release on Friday.
Fortson was rushed to the hospital following the altercation but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries, officials disclosed.
Senior Airman Fortson, who commenced his active duty service on November 19, 2019, was a member of the 4th Special Operations Squadron within the 1st Special Operations Wing stationed at Hurlburt Field. This squadron, as noted by Task and Purpose, is one of nine flying squadrons at the base and operates the AC-130 gunship.
Following a tragic incident, the Air Force's 1st Special Operations Wing has stated that their current priorities include providing casualty affairs service to the family, supporting the squadron during this difficult time, and ensuring resources are available for all those affected.
The deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave while a formal investigation is carried out, as confirmed by the sheriff's office.
