MOUNT HOREB, Wis. — Tragedy struck outside Mount Horeb Middle School when a student was fatally shot by police after pointing a pellet rifle in their direction, as reported by the state's Department of Justice.

The Wisconsin DOJ provided an update on the incident that took place at the school.

According to the DOJ, a concerned individual dialed 911 just before 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday upon spotting a person approaching the middle school carrying a backpack and what seemed to be a long gun. The state's attorney general later disclosed that the individual was a male student who was a minor, although the specific school he attended was not revealed.

A Ruger .177 caliber pellet rifle was found at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the student did not manage to enter the school premises.

"No law enforcement officers or witnesses were physically injured during the incident," according to official statements. 

The officers who were part of the shooting incident were equipped with body cameras. Currently, they have been placed on administrative leave.

The Wisconsin DOJ's Division of Criminal Investigation has taken charge of the multi-agency investigation.

Mount Horeb, situated approximately 25 miles to the west of Madison, is where the incident occurred.
