According to a recent study conducted by the Trevor Project, a leading organization in suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth, over 10% of young individuals in the United States who identify as LGBTQ attempted suicide in 2023.

This extensive survey focused on the mental well-being of LGBTQ youth and gathered responses from 18,000 individuals aged between 13 and 24. Shockingly, the results revealed that more than a third, or 39%, of LGBTQ young people had seriously contemplated suicide within the past year. This number increased to 46% for transgender and nonbinary youth. Additionally, 12% of LGBTQ youth had made suicide attempts in the previous year.

Despite these alarming statistics, the survey also highlighted that half of LGBTQ youth in need of mental health support were unable to access it. The risks of suicide were found to be significantly linked to experiences of "anti-LGBTQ+ victimization," which encompassed recent political events and instances of bullying.

"The annual survey once again highlights the prevalence of thoughts of suicide among LGBTQ+ youth. Dr. Ronita Nath, Vice President of Research at the Trevor Project, emphasized that many of the factors contributing to this risk are preventable and often stem from the harmful actions of others," stated in a press release. "It is evident from the survey that there is a critical need for supportive and affirming environments for LGBTQ+ youth, along with better assistance in embracing their authentic selves."
