Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have announced their upcoming trip to Nigeria in May for discussions regarding the Invictus Games. This sporting event, established by Harry a decade ago, is dedicated to military personnel wounded in action.
According to a Sunday statement from Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, a spokesperson for Nigeria's military, the royal couple is set to meet with service members and engage in various cultural activities during their visit. The exact arrival date of Harry and Meghan in the African nation has not been disclosed.
Harry has expressed his deep connection to Africa over the years. Along with his brother William, the Prince of Wales, he has made frequent trips to the continent since their childhood, accompanied by their father, now King Charles III, and the late Princess Diana.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Plan Trip to Nigeria
The upcoming trip for the royal couple is expected to take place either before or after Prince Harry's return to London for a thanksgiving service on May 8, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games Foundation. This will mark Harry's first visit to the U.K. since briefly visiting his father in February following the announcement of the king's cancer diagnosis. The duchess and their children will not accompany Harry on this trip to London.
Inspired by the U.S. Warrior Games, Prince Harry established the Invictus Games in 2014 to provide wounded veterans with a new sports challenge. Nigeria, a participant in last year's games, is on the itinerary for the couple's upcoming trip. The visit aims to strengthen Nigeria's presence in the games and explore the possibility of hosting the event in the future, according to Gusau.
