Midwest Braces for Severe Storms After Tornado Hits Nebraska

A tornado struck Nebraska as part of severe storms that are expected to sweep across the Midwest, putting approximately 20 million people in danger, according to the National Weather Service.

The tornado ripped through suburban Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday afternoon, causing destruction to homes as it cut through farmland and residential areas for miles. The extent of injuries or fatalities resulting from the storm was not immediately clear.

Tornado Damage in Nebraska

Details about the incident are still scarce. Nebraska Emergency Management stated to CBS News, "We are currently mobilizing resources to evaluate the damage caused by the recent severe weather affecting Lancaster County."

Images shared on social media depicted severely damaged homes and uprooted trees. Footage captured houses with roofs stripped of shingles in a rural vicinity near Omaha, where law enforcement had cordoned off roads.

Severe Weather Alert

Thunderstorms possibly bringing large hail are expected to cross the Missouri Valley and Midwest to the central and southern Plains through the weekend.

The Weather Service also issued tornado watches across parts of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. And forecasters warned that large hail and damaging wind gusts were possible.
