Tragic Loss at Topeka Zoo: Beloved Ostrich Karen Passes Away
It is with heavy hearts that the Topeka Zoo announced the passing of Karen, a vibrant ostrich who was adored by all. The unfortunate incident occurred after Karen managed to swallow keys taken from a zoo staffer, as shared on Facebook.
According to Topeka Zoo's interim Director Fawn Moser, "We are devastated by the loss of Karen. She was not just an animal; she was a beloved member of our community. Our thoughts are with our dedicated animal care team, who formed deep bonds with Karen during her time with us."
Karen joined the zoo in March last year and became a part of the newly opened Giraffe & Friends exhibit, which was described as "an interdisciplinary multi-species exhibit that transports guests to the Serengeti Plain."
The zoo fondly remembered Karen for her love of water, including swimming in the pool, playing in the sprinkler, and being the ultimate 'dancing queen!'
