Tragedy struck in Liverpool, N.Y., a suburb of Syracuse, as two officers and a suspect lost their lives in a shootout on Sunday night.
During a news conference, Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile revealed that two Syracuse officers attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle around 7 p.m. The vehicle fled, but the officers managed to track it to an address in Liverpool using its license plate.
Shortly after 8 p.m., Syracuse officers and deputies from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office converged on the address to investigate the vehicle. Upon seeing what appeared to be firearms inside, gunfire erupted, resulting in a fatal exchange of shots.
Cecile confirmed that a Syracuse officer, a deputy, and the suspect were struck and succumbed to their injuries at a hospital. There is no information available on other potential injuries.
Liverpool is among the five small suburban areas within the town of Salina, as per Salina's website.
Chief Cecile expressed, "We lost two heroes tonight."
In a somber statement, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh described the recent events as a "dark day" for the city, stating that it was "our worst nightmare come true." He expressed his condolences to the families of the two officers involved, referring to them as "those heroes."
