While on a campaign stop in Las Vegas, Vice President Kamala Harris will be advocating for Nevada's ballot measure to secure abortion access in the state constitution.
The Biden-Harris campaign is supporting the collection of signatures for the ballot initiative, led by Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom political action committee. If the required number of signatures is gathered, Nevadans will have the opportunity to vote during the general election on including abortion access for up to 24 weeks in the state's constitution.
Vice President Harris will urge Nevada voters to back the initiative, emphasizing that it is crucial to safeguard against potential actions by extremist state lawmakers who might try to implement another 'Trump abortion ban' in the future.
As of early April, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom reported the collection of over 110,000 signatures ahead of the June 26 qualification deadline. To secure a spot on the 2024 ballot, 102,362 signatures must be submitted, with 25,591 from each of Nevada's four congressional districts.
The political group confirmed that they are actively gathering signatures from all districts.
"Having gathered over 110,000 signatures in less than six weeks, it is evident that Nevadans understand the importance of enshrining reproductive freedom in our state constitution," stated president Lindsey Harmon.
During her visit to Nevada, Harris will focus on abortion rights for the second time in 2024, highlighting it as a key issue for Democrats. This visit follows the vice president's recent trip to Arizona where the state's supreme court upheld a restrictive abortion law dating back to 1864.
"Former President Donald Trump is responsible for this," Harris declared to the crowd in Tucson. "Donald Trump is the mastermind behind this healthcare crisis."
In Nevada, Harris is expected to once again attribute abortion bans to Trump and caution voters that a second Trump term could jeopardize women's reproductive rights. According to Harris, if reelected, Trump would endorse a national ban on abortion.
During her visit to Nevada, Harris will present her case for reelection alongside Arizona state Senator Eva Burch.
Additionally, on Monday, Amanda Zurawski from Texas and Kaitlyn Joshua from Louisiana will participate in a Wisconsin event for the Biden-Harris campaign. Both individuals will share their personal experiences of how their lives were impacted by restrictive abortion laws in their states following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
