Tragic Incident in Memphis
In a tragic incident in Memphis, the officer who lost his life has been identified as Joseph McKinney, a dedicated member of the police department for approximately three years. The suspect, who was also killed, has been identified as an 18-year-old man.
"The men and women of the Memphis Police Department are hurt right now. As chief of police, I am hurt right now at, once again, senseless deaths in our community by gun violence," expressed Davis.
The unfortunate shooting occurred when officers were responding to a suspicious vehicle call around 2 a.m., according to Davis. The individuals in the vehicle started shooting at the officers as they approached, Davis added.
Following an exchange of gunfire, the suspects fled the scene in their vehicle, according to Davis. After a brief chase, the suspect vehicle came to a stop. One suspect was swiftly apprehended, while the other attempted to escape but was eventually captured nearby. Both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a hospital in critical condition, as confirmed by Davis.
One of the injured officers was also taken to the hospital, but their condition was reported as non-critical by Davis. The third officer received on-site medical treatment.
Davis mentioned that the 18-year-old suspect had been arrested the previous month on charges related to auto theft and was released without bond. Additionally, during the March arrest, the suspect was found in possession of an illegally modified semiautomatic weapon.
The second suspect has been identified as a 17-year-old individual.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation into the shooting incident.
