The discovery of human remains in Lucin, a small railroad community located approximately 200 miles northwest of Salt Lake City, was announced by the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office in a news release.
Following the discovery, the FBI conducted a thorough search of the area for evidence and recovered the remains. The human remains are currently in the custody of the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner for identification confirmation, according to officials.
Dylan Rounds, who was last seen on his farm in Lucin and reported missing on May 30, 2022, was the subject of an investigation. In March 2023, the sheriff's office announced that James Brenner had been charged with aggravated murder and abuse or desecration of a human body in connection with Rounds' murder and the disposal of his body. Brenner, as part of a plea agreement, led investigators to the location of Rounds' burial site on Tuesday, as confirmed by Rounds' mother, Candice Cooley, in a statement to East Idaho News.
"Gratitude fills our hearts for the overwhelming support and love we have received," Cooley shared with the outlet. "Having Dylan's body back with us is a bittersweet moment as we continue to seek justice."
As per a probable cause statement, Rounds' final phone signal led to a pond close to Brenner's location, as reported by KUTV. Rounds' boots were discovered near a dirt mound, and his phone was found at the bottom of the pond, the East Idaho News The sheriff's office announced on Tuesday that no further details would be disclosed to avoid jeopardizing the ongoing legal proceedings. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Dylan Rounds' family during this difficult time," the office expressed. "We extend our deepest condolences for the loss of their loved one. We recognize the magnitude of their grief and offer our heartfelt sympathies. May they find solace and peace in the days ahead."
