Stanford University made a groundbreaking announcement regarding Tara VanDerveer, the Director of Women's Basketball and coach, who will be retiring after an illustrious career.
VanDerveer shared the news on Tuesday, marking the end of her 38-season tenure with Stanford. In January, she achieved a monumental milestone by becoming the winningest coach in NCAA history, notching 1,203 wins with a victory over Oregon State on Jan. 21, surpassing the record previously held by Mike Krzyzewski.
With her current record standing at 1,216 wins, VanDerveer also guided Stanford's women's team to three NCAA championships and 14 Final Four appearances.
The university is currently in talks with Kate Paye to take over VanDerveer's position. Paye, who played under VanDerveer in the '90s, has been a part of her coaching staff for almost two decades.
"Tara's impact on the sport is immeasurable, and women's basketball owes much of its current success to her pioneering efforts," stated Stanford's Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics, Bernard Muir. "Her influence is unparalleled, and it's fair to say she is one of the most influential figures ever associated with this university."
While stepping down from her coaching role, VanDerveer will continue to be a part of Stanford's athletics department in an advisory capacity.
