Washington — In response to a proposal by House Republicans to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after former President Donald Trump, some Democratic colleagues have put forth their own idea. They introduced a bill that suggests naming a federal prison after the former president.

The two-page bill, presented on Friday, aims to rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution in Florida as the "Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution." Just like the Republican proposal to change Dulles to the "Donald J. Trump International Airport," this Democratic bill is not expected to progress.

"When our Republican colleagues introduced their bill to rename Dulles after Donald Trump, I suggested that a federal prison would be a more appropriate choice," stated Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia on Friday.

Connolly, representing parts of the Dulles airport in his district, collaborated on the bill with Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida and Rep. John Garamendi of California.

"I don't see any reason to delay," Connolly remarked. "I hope our Republican friends will join us in awarding Donald J. Trump with the only honor he truly deserves."

The Democrats' Jab at Trump

In a move to provoke Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, the Democrats highlighted the numerous state and federal charges he is currently facing in four separate cases. One of these cases, in Florida, accuses Trump of mishandling classified documents post his tenure at the White House. Trump maintains his innocence, pleading not guilty to all charges and refuting any allegations of wrongdoing.

"I cannot think of a more fitting tribute to our former president, Donald J. Trump, than renaming the nearest federal prison to Mar-a-Lago in his honor," stated Garamendi.
