Attention all Walmart shoppers! If you purchased certain weighted groceries or bagged fruit between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, you may be eligible to claim part of a $45 million settlement. The settlement resolves allegations that Walmart overcharged for items such as packaged meat, poultry, pork, seafood, and bagged citrus.
Customers who made in-store purchases of weighted goods or bagged citrus at any of Walmart's 4,615 U.S. stores during the specified time frame could receive up to $500 as part of the class-action settlement. Those with a receipt can claim 2% of the total cost of their purchase, with a cap at $500. For those without a receipt, claims between $10 and $25 are still possible depending on the amount attested to be purchased.
The lawsuit, filed in October 2022, alleged that Walmart's prices for sold-by-weight goods were higher than their actual per unit costs, causing customers to pay more than the lowest advertised price in-store for these food items.
Walmart has refuted any allegations of liability or misconduct in the case, as stated in the settlement agreement submitted to a federal court in Tampa, Fla., in November.
Customers are given until June 5 to file a claim and take part in the settlement. However, the final approval of the settlement is pending, with a hearing scheduled for June 12. Individuals who wish to be excluded from the settlement can choose to opt out by May 22.
