Tragic Incident at Virginia State Prison
Heartbreaking news emerged from a state prison in Virginia as a brave police dog named Rivan lost his life while protecting an officer from an assault by MS-13 gang members, officials confirmed.
Rivan, a dedicated K-9 unit member since 2019, was by the side of corrections officer Kharmishia Phillip Fields when chaos erupted at Sussex I State Prison. Three inmates, known to be affiliated with the notorious MS-13 gang, attacked another inmate under the apparent supervision of a fellow prisoner.
Responding swiftly to the disturbance, Phillip Fields and Rivan intervened to restore order and ensure the safety of all individuals involved. Tragically, during the course of their brave actions, Rivan was viciously stabbed and kicked by the assailants, leading to fatal injuries.
Despite efforts to save him, Rivan succumbed to his wounds on-site, leaving behind a legacy of service and loyalty. The five-year-old canine, who would have celebrated his sixth birthday at the end of April, will be honored with a memorial service.
Fortunately, thanks to her training and the courageous actions of Rivan, Phillip Fields escaped the incident without serious injuries, as confirmed by prison officials.
The injured inmate was promptly taken to a hospital for medical attention and later returned to Sussex I State Prison, marking a somber chapter in the facility's history.
"Ensuring the safety of our corrections team is our top priority," stated VADOC Director Chad Dotson. "Officer Phillip Fields has our full support during this challenging period, and I personally extend my best wishes for her recovery. The loss of Rivan is undeniably tragic, but his sacrifice was not in vain. He gave his life while potentially saving the lives of two individuals, his assigned Officer and an inmate. Rivan's sacrifice will always be remembered by the VADOC."
Authorities have announced that the corrections department intends to "pursue prosecution" of the inmates responsible for the attack. While the inmates involved were not named, officials disclosed that they originated from El Salvador and Guatemala. All four individuals were in the United States unlawfully at the time of their arrest and subsequent conviction. They were serving time for various offenses including first-degree homicide, attempted rape, kidnapping, and child pornography charges. Additionally, three out of the four inmates are confirmed members of MS-13, as per officials.
An ongoing investigation is being conducted into the assault.
