Washington — The passing of Former Sen. Joe Lieberman, a prominent figure in Connecticut politics and the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee in 2000, has left many in mourning. Lieberman, who served in the Senate from 1989 to 2013, passed away at the age of 82 in New York City due to complications from a fall, as confirmed by his family.

"His enduring love for God, family, and country shone brightly throughout his years of dedicated public service," the family statement expressed, noting that Lieberman was surrounded by his beloved wife, Hadassah, and other family members at the time of his passing.

Lieberman made history as Al Gore's running mate in 2000, marking the first Jewish candidate on a major party ticket. Throughout his career, he diverged from the Democratic Party on various issues, notably his stance in favor of the Iraq War. In 2006, he secured his final term as an independent.

A funeral service to honor Lieberman's life will take place on Friday at Congregation Agudath Sholom in his hometown of Stamford. A memorial service is set to follow at a later date.
