London — In a video message released Friday, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, revealed that cancer was detected during her January abdominal surgery and she is now undergoing preventative chemotherapy as advised by her medical team. The announcement follows months of speculation about her health and controversy surrounding manipulated images released by Kensington Palace.

Kate shared that the cancer was found during tests conducted after her surgery, which was successful.

"This news was a complete shock, and William and I have been dealing with it privately to protect our young family," Kate expressed in the video message. "It has been a process to come to terms with everything. I needed time to recover from the surgery before beginning treatment. But, most importantly, we took the time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that they could understand, reassuring them that I will be alright."

Kensington Palace stated that the video message was recorded by BBC Studios in Windsor on Wednesday. Kate mentioned that she is currently in the "early stages" of her chemotherapy treatment.

"I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits," Kate said in the video. "Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both."

She said that she would continue to take the time and space she needs to undergo treatment and recover, and asked the public for understanding.

"My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery. At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone."

Kate's announcement comes after growing public speculation over her health that until now had been met with silence from the palace.

In January, Kensington Palace announced she underwent planned abdominal surgery and would be taking time to recover in private at least until Easter, on March 31. It said there would be no updates on her health as she recuperated, and said the surgery was not cancer-related.

Following the recent controversy surrounding the authenticity of photos released by the royal family, speculation about Kate Middleton's health continues to circulate. On Britain's Mother's Day in March, a photo of Kate and her three children was released, sparking rumors of photo manipulation. Despite admitting to editing the image in a social media post, Kensington Palace has refused to provide the public with the original, unedited version.

Additionally, another photo featuring the late Queen Elizabeth with her grandchildren has also come under scrutiny for potential alterations. The lack of transparency from the royal family has only fueled further speculation.

Recent reports from British tabloids claim that Kate was sighted in public with her husband, Prince William, at a farm shop near their family's home in Windsor. Witnesses described Kate as "happy, relaxed, and healthy," contradicting the rumors about her well-being.

In February, King Charles, Kate's father-in-law, announced that he would be undergoing treatment for cancer following the discovery of the disease during treatment for an enlarged prostate. Updates on his condition have been provided by Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, who have expressed gratitude for the public's support during this challenging time.
