A daring man has confessed to charges of human smuggling after he was caught aiding individuals in their journey from Mexico to the U.S. by utilizing a California sewage pipe, federal prosecutors revealed on Thursday.
Kevin Noe Campos Villa, a 20-year-old from Tijuana, Mexico, pleaded guilty to the crime of bringing unauthorized immigrants into the country through a location other than an official port of entry. This offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000, as stated by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California in a press release.
According to the plea agreement, Campos confessed to assisting seven unauthorized immigrants in navigating sewer pipes near the San Ysidro port of entry amidst heavy rainfall. These sewer pipes, which link the U.S. and Mexico at various points, are typically secured with grates to prevent unauthorized access. However, during periods of intense rain, these grates are removed to facilitate water flow and prevent damage to the system.
Border Patrol Officers Rescue Immigrants from Tijuana River
Reports indicate that Campos was caught aiding unauthorized immigrants through sewer pipes by U.S. Border Patrol officers. Upon confrontation, Campos and three immigrants attempted to flee and accidentally fell into the Tijuana River. Fortunately, San Diego lifeguards were able to rescue them from the water. Two of the individuals rescued expressed their fear for their lives as they did not know how to swim.
Campos confessed to receiving payment for guiding the group across the border, admitting that he was paid $6,000 for his services. Additionally, he acknowledged his involvement in constructing ladders for smuggling operations aimed at crossing the U.S.-Mexico border fence.
"This case exemplifies the prioritization of profits by transnational smuggling organizations at the expense of safety," stated U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath. "Thanks to the swift action of law enforcement and the assistance provided by local lifeguards, all lives involved were saved."
Campos is scheduled for sentencing on June 17.
