Thirteen-year-old Mia Armstrong, an actor and model, sees Down syndrome as a superpower in her new children's book titled "I Am a Masterpiece!" In the book, Mia shares that mean words bounce off her "like a super shield," highlighting her unique perspective and experiences.

Aside from discussing her life experiences, Mia also delivers a crucial message of inclusivity and kindness. "I want them to look at me and be kind to others with or without disabilities," Mia expressed.

Cara Armstrong, Mia's mother, reflects on the privilege and learning journey of raising a child with Down syndrome. This experience led them to co-author the book, aiming to bridge the gap in resources for parents to explain Down syndrome to children effectively.

"I think that's one area that we're lacking in is the tools for parents to sit and explain in an age-appropriate way what it means to have Down syndrome and that removes the barriers for Mia to have to answer those questions. If kids come armed with information, then friendship is the next step," Cara Armstrong shared.

Mia and her mother believe that patience is crucial, especially when dealing with people who may not be familiar with Down syndrome and forget their manners. Armstrong, Mia's mother, emphasizes the importance of empowering others to ask thoughtful questions as a way to promote inclusion.

Living her daily life, Mia teaches her family about the values of patience and persistence.

"Raising a child with Down syndrome is a privilege," Armstrong expressed. "Mia inspires me every day with her resilience and ability to live in the present moment."

Aside from her advocacy work and writing, Mia finds joy in activities like surfing and riding rollercoasters.

"I'm a bit of a daredevil," Mia admitted.

Despite the challenges of balancing various responsibilities, Mia approaches life with a positive attitude and determination, stating, "It's fulfilling to engage in all these activities, but managing them all at once can be stressful, so we take it one step at a time."
