JetBlue Airways is making changes to its route network, including the elimination of unprofitable routes in the U.S. and overseas. This decision comes after a failed $3.8 billion bid for Spirit Airlines earlier this year.

As part of the cost-cutting measures, JetBlue will no longer serve Kansas City, Missouri, and Newburgh, New York.

The airline stated that the route adjustments aim to reduce delays for customers and allocate aircraft to more lucrative routes. Limited aircraft availability, exacerbated by a dozen grounded Airbus planes with Pratt and Whitney engine issues, was also a factor in the route changes.

"With the need to enhance our financial performance and the current aircraft constraints, every route must demonstrate its profitability to remain in our network," said Dave Jehn, JetBlue's VP of network planning and airline partnerships in an internal memo obtained by CBS News.

JetBlue is also discontinuing service to international destinations such as Bogotá, Colombia; Quito, Ecuador; and Lima, Peru.
