Israeli Strikes in Syria and Lebanon
An airstrike conducted by Israel on the Syrian capital of Damascus resulted in the destruction of a building used by the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. This attack claimed the lives of at least five Iranians, according to officials from both Syria and Iran.
The Syrian army reported that the targeted building, located in the heavily guarded Mazzeh neighborhood in western Damascus, was completely demolished. They further stated that the Israeli air force launched the missiles while flying over the Golan Heights, which is currently occupied by Israel. The Israeli military has not provided any comments regarding the incident.
Shortly after the Damascus strike, an Israeli drone targeted a car near the southern Lebanese port city of Tyre. This attack resulted in the deaths of two Hezbollah members who were in the vehicle, as well as two individuals who were in a nearby orchard. An official from Hezbollah and Lebanon's state news agency confirmed these casualties. The official, who spoke anonymously in accordance with regulations, identified one of the deceased as Ali Hudruj, a local Hezbollah commander. No further details were provided.
Nour News, a news outlet believed to have close ties to Iran's intelligence apparatus, has named two of the individuals killed in Damascus as Gen. Sadegh Omidzadeh, the intelligence deputy of the guard's expeditionary Quds Force in Syria, and his deputy, known by the alias Hajj Gholam. However, the Revolutionary Guard later released a statement identifying the five deceased as Hojjatollah Omidvar, Ali Aghazadeh, Hossein Mohammadi, Saeed Karimi, and Mohammad Amin Samadi, without specifying their ranks. The conflicting information has not been reconciled at this time.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, at least six individuals, including five Iranians and one Syrian, were killed in a missile attack. The attack occurred during a meeting of officials from Iran-backed groups. Rami Abdurrahman, the Observatory's chief, stated that three of the Iranians killed were commanders, and four individuals are still missing under the rubble.
Nasser Kanaani, a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, condemned the Israeli strike in a statement. He affirmed that the "blood of these high-ranking martyrs will not be wasted" and stated that Tehran reserves the right to respond to the "organized terrorism of the fake Zionist regime" at an appropriate time and place.
Iran has once again attempted to link Israel to the Islamic State group, a claim its leaders have been making since a suicide bombing by the extremists in Iran earlier this year resulted in the deaths of over 90 people.
Following the attack, security forces have been deployed around the destroyed four-story building. Ambulances and fire engines are present in the area, and a search for individuals trapped under the rubble is currently underway. Nearby buildings have also experienced shattered windows.
A local grocery store near the incident reported hearing a series of five explosions at approximately 10:15 a.m. The witness stated that afterwards, he saw the bodies of a man and a woman being carried away, along with three injured individuals.
"The shop shook. I stayed inside for a few seconds, then went outside and saw smoke rising from behind the mosque," said an anonymous man, who requested to remain unnamed for security reasons, in an interview with The Associated Press.
Khaled Mawed, a resident living nearby, expressed his terror, stating, "What happened was horrifying. I couldn't believe it."
These events unfolded against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the region, as Israel continues its offensive in Gaza. The ongoing military campaign, which has been one of the most deadly and destructive in recent history, has resulted in the deaths of nearly 25,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. Additionally, it has caused widespread destruction and forced over 80% of the territory's 2.3 million people to flee their homes.
Israel launched its offensive in response to a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of approximately 250 others. Israel believes that around 130 hostages are still held by Hamas. This conflict has heightened tensions throughout the region and has the potential to ignite further hostilities.
Last month, an Israeli airstrike targeted a suburb of Damascus, resulting in the death of Iranian general Seyed Razi Mousavi, a long-time advisor to the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in Syria. Israel has also conducted operations against Palestinian and Lebanese operatives in Syria over the past few years.
Iranian and Syrian Officials Confirm Presence of Iranian Military Experts in Syria
Iranian and Syrian officials have openly acknowledged the presence of Iranian advisers and military experts in Syria. However, they have consistently denied the deployment of ground troops. Instead, thousands of fighters from Iran-backed groups have actively participated in Syria's conflict since March 2011, ultimately tipping the balance of power in favor of President Bashar Assad.
Israel has conducted numerous strikes on targets located within government-controlled areas of war-torn Syria in recent years.
Israel Targets Iran-Allied Militant Groups in Syria
While Israel rarely takes responsibility for its actions in Syria, it has openly stated that it targets bases belonging to Iran-allied militant groups, including Lebanon's Hezbollah. Hezbollah has sent a large number of fighters to support Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.
In a recent incident, Israel allegedly carried out a strike in Beirut that resulted in the death of a top Hamas commander named Saleh Arouri.
Recent weeks have also witnessed rockets being launched from Syria into northern Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. These incidents, along with attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, have further escalated tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border.
