The Los Angeles Innocence Project announced on Thursday that they will be taking on the Scott Peterson murder case.

In a statement, Pat Harris, Peterson's attorney, expressed their excitement about the LA Innocence Project joining the case. "We are very excited to have the incredibly talented attorneys from the LA Innocence Project lend their considerable expertise to helping prove Scott's innocence," Harris said.

In 2004, Peterson was convicted of the murder of his pregnant wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Conner. He was sentenced to death in 2005.

The LA Innocence Project focuses on exonerating individuals who have been wrongly convicted through the use of forensic and other scientific evidence.

The organization has stated that they are currently investigating Peterson's claim of actual innocence but did not provide any further comment.

In August 2020, the California Supreme Court overturned Peterson's death sentence after finding that jurors were dismissed erroneously, partially due to their objections to the death penalty on a questionnaire. In 2021, Peterson was resentenced to life without parole.

During the resentencing in 2021, Peterson's attorney stated that his client has shown no remorse because he maintains his innocence.

Peterson's image took a dramatic turn when news broke of his affair with Amber Frey during his wife's disappearance, according to Harris.

Harris stated in 2021 that Peterson quickly became the most despised man in America.

Prosecutors alleged that on Christmas Eve 2002, Peterson removed his wife's body from their Modesto residence and discarded it into the San Francisco Bay from his fishing boat. The remains washed ashore in April 2003.

Peterson admitted to being out fishing on the day his wife vanished. He had conducted research on ocean currents, secretly purchased a boat, and was unable to provide a clear explanation of the type of fish he was attempting to catch that day.

In the weeks following Laci's disappearance, Peterson sold her car, explored the possibility of selling their house, and converted the baby nursery into a storage room.

Ultimately, Peterson was arrested after Frey, a massage therapist residing in Fresno, informed the police that they had started dating a month prior to his wife's demise, but he had informed her that his wife was deceased.
