The Biden administration has announced a military assistance package worth $250 million for Ukraine. This aid package, which is the final one for 2023, will include various arms and equipment such as air defense munitions, anti-armor munitions, ammunition for high mobility artillery rocket systems, and more than 15 million rounds of small arms ammunition, according to a State Department spokesperson speaking to CBS News.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of this assistance in supporting Ukraine's defense against Russia's aggression, stating that it is crucial for Ukraine to defend its country and freedom. He further urged Congress to swiftly approve additional aid for Ukraine.

The State Department spokesperson highlighted the United States' commitment to Ukraine's defense and protection of its people, stating that this announcement demonstrates the enduring support against Russia's brutal aggression. This announcement follows President Biden's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House earlier this month.

In contrast, Ukraine's allies have significantly reduced their funding for the country, reaching its lowest level since the beginning of the war, according to the Ukraine aid tracker by the German-based Kiel Institute.

Republicans Block Additional Ukraine Funding

Earlier this month, Senate Republicans blocked additional Ukraine funding over a dispute with Democrats over U.S. border security. On Dec. 14, Hungary blocked about $55 billion in European Union aid for Ukraine.

"The decisions we make now are going to determine the future for decades to come, particularly in Europe," said a spokesperson for the Biden administration. "And this is one of those moments. Congress needs to pass the supplemental funding for Ukraine before they break for the holiday recess, before they give [Vladimir] Putin the greatest Christmas gift they could possibly give him."

Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the $250 million in military aid to Ukraine needs congressional approval.
