Toy Drive Organizer Gives Back to Community
Seven years ago, a young man named Reed Marcum noticed that his classmates in McAlester, Oklahoma, were in need of school supplies. Realizing that if their families couldn't afford basic school supplies, the holiday season would likely be tough for them as well, Marcum decided to take action.
With the understanding that Christmas can be an expensive holiday, Marcum organized a backpack giveaway to help those in need. This small act of kindness sparked a realization that people would also struggle during the holiday season, leading Marcum to start a toy drive.
What began as a simple toy drive has now grown into one of the largest in the state. This year, the line of people waiting to receive toys stretched more than three miles. The drive-thru warehouse was filled with over 10,000 toys, all of which were given away to families in need.
Now 18 years old, Marcum has given out more than 64,000 toys over the years with the help of the local 4-H organization. He believes that the holiday spirit is present in everyone and finds joy in giving back to his community.
