Toy Company Mattel Developing Live-Action Film Based on American Girl Dolls
Toy company Mattel is currently in the process of developing a live-action film based on its popular American Girl doll line. This exciting announcement comes hot on the heels of the incredibly successful "Barbie" movie, which grossed over a billion dollars worldwide and became the highest-grossing film of the year.
Lindsey Anderson Beer, the talented writer and executive producer of "Sierra Burgess is a Loser" and director of "Pet Sematary: Bloodlines," has been chosen to produce and write the screenplay for the American Girl doll movie. In a statement released on Wednesday, Anderson Beer expressed her personal connection to the dolls.
"Growing up, my sister and I were American Girl girls. I had Kirsten, and she had Molly," Anderson Beer said. "They didn't feel like dolls to play with, rather real people whose worlds we got to imagine ourselves in. They are historically accurate toys and accessories that feature elaborate and immersive backstories uniquely suited to bring to screen."
This upcoming live-action film based on the American Girl doll line is sure to captivate audiences and bring the beloved dolls to life in a whole new way. Fans of the dolls can look forward to seeing their favorite characters and stories on the big screen in the near future.
The American Girl dolls, which were first introduced in 1986, have become beloved by children and collectors alike. Each doll has a unique name and backstory that was released alongside a corresponding novel. One of the dolls, Kirsten, is a Swedish immigrant living in Minnesota in 1854. Molly, another popular doll, lived in Jefferson, Illinois during World War II, with her father caring for wounded soldiers and her mother working for the Red Cross.
Since their initial release, the American Girl doll line has expanded to include contemporary dolls and characters, as well as dolls that represent diverse backgrounds and different points in U.S. history. The company has sold over 36 million dolls to date.
A new American Girl doll movie is in the works, with production being handled by Mattel Films, Paramount Pictures, and Temple Hill Entertainment. Mattel Films has also announced plans to develop live-action films featuring other popular brands such as Barney, Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, and Thomas & Friends.
This upcoming movie is not the first time the American Girl brand has made its way onto the screen. Previous made-for-TV and streaming offerings have explored the stories of both the historical characters and the contemporary "Girl of the Year" dolls. In 2008, a G-rated theatrical release called "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" was based on the doll from the Great Depression era.
Ken Movie Possibility
There has been speculation regarding the potential for a Ken movie. Greta Gerwig, the director of "Barbie," recently mentioned in an interview with "60 Minutes" that she is not completely ruling it out.
"I mean, the truth is, you know — I guess we'll see," she stated.
